Scale effects and similarity laws on high/hypervelocity impact penetration

Abstract

Based on dimension theory, a general form of penetration similarity is established. And the existing test data at home and abroad are analyzed. The influence law of penetration on the scale effects is revealed. It is considered that the strain-rate effect of materials, occurrence and evolution of damage, heat conduction, rotation, and gravity affect the geometric similarity laws. Among them, the effect of heat conduction and gravity on the geometric similarity law of the penetration process is less significant. If the experimental conditions are strictly controlled and the influence of strain rate, damage, and rotation of projectile materials is considered insignificant without changing the projectile materials and targets, the geometric similarity law of the high/hypervelocity penetration process can be approximately established.
